Royal and Noble Titles of Borael

King/Queen	Majesty	Hereditary monarch of the nation. Head of state.
Crown Prince or Princess	Royal Highness	The first-born child or the King or Queen and monarchal heir.
Crown Consort	Highness	The spouse of the Crown Prince or Princess.
Prince	Highness	any non-inheriting sons of the King or Queen as well as brothers of the King or Queen.
Princess	Highness	any non-inheriting daughters of the King or Queen, as well as sisters of the King or Queen.
Prince or Princess Consort	Lord/Lady Consort	The spouse of a Prince or Princess
Marquis/Marquess	Grace	Large land-holding vassals of the King/Queen. There are four Marquis/Marquesses of Borael
Baron/Baroness	Lord/Lady	The Barons and Baronesses of Borael mostly rule the cities of Borael, though a few have rural holdings.
Lord/Lady	Lord/Lady	The lowest noble title for a land-holding person of a noble bloodline. Lords hold various parcels of land throughout Borael and within city districts.
Baronet	Lord/Lady	A noble title that is usually granted by a Baron or higher noble for some sort of service to the crown that is also tied to a parcel of land.
Viscount	Lord/Lady	A noble title that is usually granted by a Baron or higher noble for some sort of service to the crown that is not tied to land holdings.
Knight	Sir/Dame	Not to be confused with a Cavalier or Paladin, an aristocratic knight is the first rung on the ladder of nobility.

National Political Titles of Borael

The Lord High Exchequer	Runs the national bureaucracy (taxation, census rolls, etc.). Appointed by the King/Queen.
	Chamberlains: Supervisors
	High Clerks: Managers
	Clerks: Workers
The Lord High Magistrate	Enforces the King’s laws and oversees the lesser magistrates. Appointed by the King/Queen.
	High Magistrates: Oversee the legal system of a city or region.
	Magistrates: Oversee the legal system of a city district or village.
	Lords of the Watch: Oversee the law enforcement within a city.
The Lord High Commodore	Head of the Boraelan Navy. Appointed by the King/Queen.
	Lords of the Harbor: Over the dockside operations of a city (be it riverside or seaside)
	Captains: lead ships into battle, patrols, etc.
The Lord High Herald	Head of the state’s intelligence network. Appointed by the King/Queen.
	Heralds: Messengers, spies, diplomatic corps.
The Lord High Steward	Head of the Royal Household and personal security. Appointed by the King/Queen.
	Iron Guard : Elite guards that protect the King and Queen day and night.
	Royal household staff
The Lord Chamberlain	Head of the Royal Household Treasury. Appointed by the King/Queen.

The Master of Horse	Head of the Royal Stables and the stables of the army in times of war. Appointed by the King/Queen.

The Iron Council

The Lord High Exchequer, The Lord High Magistrate, The Lord High Commodore, The Lord High Herald, and the Lord Steward form the Iron Council that advises the monarch on matters concerning the state.

Marriage and Customs of Inheritance

It is customary amongst the nobility of Borael for the non-noble spouse of a nobleperson to take the surname of the house into which they are marrying, regardless of their gender. Thus, if a common man was marrying a Lady, he would take her noble surname.

Among the royal line, there are special titles for the spouses of dignitaries (Crown Consort, Prince/Princess Consort). Among the nobility, spouses taken on the titles of their noble spouse (Marquis, Marquess, Lord, Lady, etc.). In the lower orders of nobility (Baronet, Viscount, and Knighthood), the noble title is only conferred upon the individual, not their family. Therefore, the spouse of a Baronet would be “Master” or “Mistress”. The title is inheritable, but only to the first-born or appointed heir and only conferred upon investiture (death of the previous holder, abdication, etc.).

In Borael, inheritance is a matter of birth order, not birth gender. Therefore, the gender of the first-born does not matter—only that they were first-born.
