Government
The city of Almathriel is ruled by a Prince or Princess of the Stars (a non-inheriting offspring of the elven monarch). The post is usually appointed by the monarch of the elves.
The Prince or Princess oversees the work of, and is advised by, the other high positions within the city. They are appointed by their superior in the hierarchy.
The Vice-Guardian of the Word is appointed by the Guardian of the Word and presides over the city’s bureaucracy. This bureaucracy is devoted primarily to the maintenance of the city treasury and the collection of taxes. The Vice-Guardian is also the keeper of all the city’s records.
The High Magistrate is appointed by the Guardian of the Law and presides over the city’s court system. They appoint lesser magistrates for each of the city’s districts.
The Captain of the Watch is appointed by the Guardian of the Peace and presides over the city’s militia and local enforcement of the Prince or Princess’ law.
Points of Interest
The outside of the city is surrounded by 20’ high gleaming white stone walls covered in ivy.
The city is comprised of a series of concentric rings, each with a separate wall. The outermost ring is the Traveler’s Ring, a district comprised of most of the non-elven population of the city and easily the poorest section of the city. The next ring is the Silver Ring, essentially the market district. The next ring is the Spire Ring, dominated by the Spire of Magic. It is comprised mostly of salons, academies, dormitories, spell component shops, and magic dealers. The center-most ring is the Rose Ring, comprised of the royal palace and residences, the residences of most of the nobility, the city bureaucracy, and other official buildings.
The Rose Throne resides in the Royal Palace near the center of the city, in the Rose Ring.
The Spire of Magic, a gleaming white tower that comes to a point some 200 feet in the air, is set upon the convergence of ley lines in the city and is a popular destination for spellcasters wishing to learn more about their craft. It is a prominent feature of the Spire Ring.
