  • When running in Heavy Armor, triple your speed, not quadruple
  • A Tower Shield can, instead, grant you Cover (see description)
  • In a locked Guantlet, your hand is not free to cast spells.

Cost : Price in gold pieces for Small or Medium-sized armor

Armor/Shield Bonus : Bonus added to Armor Class for armor or shields. Armor bonuses do not stack with other armor bonuses and shield bonuses do not stack with other shield bonuses.

Maximum Dexterity Bonus : Maximum bonus to AC from Dexterity allowed by this armor.

Armor Check Penalty : Armor check penalty applies to all Dexterity or Strength based skill checks. If the character is wearing armor and using a shield, both penalties apply.

  • Non-proficient: If the character is not proficient with the armor or shield being worn, then the Armor Check penalty also applies to attack rolls
  • Sleeping in Armor: A character who sleeps in medium or heavy armor is automatically fatigued the next day (-2 to STR and DEX and cannot charge or run).

Arcane Spell Failure Chance : This failure chance only applies if the spell has a somatic component.

  • Bards may cast their spells wearing light armor and using shields without incurring this penalty.
  • If wearing armor and using a shield, add the two percentages together for a single percentage roll.

Speed : Human, Elves, and Half-Elves use the first column (30’), Dwarves and Halflings use the second column (20’).

Weight : Weight figures are for Medium-sized armor. Armors fitted for Small creatures weight half as much; Armors fitted for Large creatures weigh twice as much.

Masterwork Armor

Just as with weapons, you can purchase or craft masterwork versions of armor or shields…

  • Armor check penalty is lessened by 1.
  • Costs an extra 150 gp over and above the normal cost for that type of armor or shield
  • Never provides a bonus on attack or damage rolls, even if the armor or shield is used as a weapon.
  • All magic armors and shields are automatically considered to be of masterwork quality.
  • You can’t add the masterwork quality to armor or a shield after it is created; it must be crafted as a masterwork item.
